O'Neil auditioned for Canada Idol's season 3 at the beginning of 2005 when she was still a high school student. The judges loved her voice and she advanced into the Top 100 Round. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by the judges. However, O'Neil suffered a significant defeat during her Top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she got votes for lowest 3 and the second lowest. They were stunned by the outcome and urged the audience to support contestants with strong singing talents such as Melissa. With consistently excellent performances from that point forward, O'Neil never again finished in the bottom three. The performance she gave on the 7th of September in 2005 was such a dazzling performance that the judge Werner predicted that the headlines in the newspapers. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie, becoming the 3rd Canadian Idol. O'Neil was contacted right away from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her triumph on Canadian Idol.
