O'Grady's father is Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. The family was raised by her parents within Wheaton (Illinois) as well. She was a graduate of North High School of Wheaton. She appeared on a few commercials on television, but then moved to Los Angeles. Her first job was an Montgomery Ward model, where she also appeared in a variety of commercials. She first appeared on screen in 1988 in the romantic comedy She's Having a Baby. She was then cast as the main character in ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. Her other guest appearances included TV shows, independent movies, and several others. Donna Abandando, her first important role on the ABC police drama NYPD Blue was the character she played. O'Grady was the big-haired team secretary for the ABC drama NYPD Blue from 1993 through 1996. Every year, she earned Emmy Award nods for Outstanding actor in the Drama Series. Together with the cast, she won Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in an Drama Series in 1995.
